Innovation is the driving force of capitalism, its inability to stagnate, its inherent dynamism is what sets it apart from other systems and what makes it the fundamental characteristic of modern life.

This means an annual waste of at least $3400 per person on unnecessary business travel! This happens when fre-quent collaboration with existing communications systems is not effective. This forces managers to synchronize teams through expensive face-to-face meetings requiring travel
• Lack of parity in communication services reduced productivity by an average of 7.8 hours a month for respondents who spent at least 10% of their time working from remote locations. This productivity reduction exists only because workers are not equipped with effective, remotely-accessible collaboration tools.
• 75% incurred incremental communication costs on up to 4 business trips within the last six months, with an average expense of $186 per trip and an average annual cost of $1488 per business traveller. These are the additional communica-tions expenses on top of typical travel expenses.

Make no mistake, their findings should alarm you, they should spring you into action. One needs to be ready. Capitalism’s innovation masks its other driving principle: competition. Consider your current competitors. At the moment, you each have your own slice of the market. It costs a business what, say £35 per month?

Then the digital switch over happened. Businesses opted for the new ISDN services in the nineties. Broadly speaking ISDN has been reliable and now of course we take Calling Line Identity for granted – it’s now on analogue, too.

ISDN was also adopted for high speed internet access. Well it seemed fast at the time.

Is it all over for ISDN?

Well it could be. A 20 user business will typically need 8 channels of ISDN and if moving office would need to spend around £1k on installation, unless they signed up for a long term contract with a commitment to spend quite a lot of money with the carrier.

They would also have to factor in the cost of an ISDN30 or Primary Rate ,component in the phone system. This is typically £1.5k.

And rental – around £15 per channel per month.

Over a 36 month period rental will cost £4320 and if you add in the cost of  ISDN installation and the card, the ISDN adopter will be be paying £6820 at current prices on top of the phone system.

The alternative, SIP Trunks, would cost around £40 per month for a managed business broadband service and £4 per month per channel. Over 36 months the total will be £2620.

Our Siemens HiPath and LG systems come preconfigured for SIP trunks and there’s no ISDN card needed.  They save in excess of £4000 over 3 years for an 8 line system and that’s without factoring in savings in call charges.

Sorry ISDN. You could be going the way of the typewriter.

SIP Trunks, what are they?

SIP Trunk is the term given by the new breed of telecoms carriers to describe their Voice over IP, VoIP, service. SIP is an international standard and is being adopted rapidly.

VoIP is the term given to the transmission of voice calls, typically over broadband.

Yes, SIP Trunks could well be right for your business. They’re much less expensive, call charges are less, you can keep existing numbers, for ever, even when you move, can have ‘out of area’ numbers and, even overseas numbers.Increasing numbers of our customers are choosing not to install ISDN when they move and many are switching from ISDN to SIP.

And if your broadband goes down, calls are automatically routed to pre-programmed numbers.

Some phone system manufacturers now include provision for SIP Trunks. Sometimes these are free, whereas cards which enable ISDN connectivity are often extra. VoIP enabled systems will usually allow home based workers to be connected to their main office phone system, just as if they were in the office.

ISDN

These became the standard kind of business phone line in the nineties. There are two types. ISDN2 or Basic Rate and ISDN30 or Primary Rate. They were adopted to enable Calling Line Identity and Direct Dialling Inward, DDI, services not available on analogue lines at the time – DDI still isn’t. Highly reliable, ISDN is, when compared to SIP Trunks, expensive. Call charges over ISDN are more expensive than SIP. But when a problem occurs, for example, when lines are down, arranging diverts can be time consuming.

Analogue Lines

Just when we thought they were on the way out, they came back! Often still used in small offices, they are required to deliver broadband, so almost every business has analogue lines.

Broadband

Most of us receive broadband over an ADSL service, delivered over analogue lines – Virgin has a direct cabled service.

What are the drawbacks of SIP Trunks?

They won’t work if your broadband goes down. Call quality will be poor if you don’t have enough bandwidth. Your office LAN needs to be properly set up in order to take full advantage of the benefits of SIP.
